Dominic Pax 8.10.2009

On August 10th, 2009, we welcomed our precious gift, Dominic Pax, into the world. He weighed 8lbs 12 oz (3.98kg) at birth, and was 21 inches long. He was absolutely beautiful, and the spitting image of his father when Eric was a newborn. Here he is looking somewhat grumpy, but that's not too surprising considering he came from a warm cozy womb into a brightly lit operating room!

He had a spontaneous pneumothorax (tear in the lung) when he was born, so was immediately taken to the infant special care unit (ISCU) and monitored under an oxygen tent for a couple of days. We didn't worry too much as we were reassured it wasn't a chronically dangerous condition, and would resolve within 5-7 days. Thankfully he only spent 2 nights in the ISCU and was then completely healed, and released to be with us in our room. After a long labor and delivery, with a minor surgical complication, it was pretty tough to then not be able to hold my son for almost 2 days. In fact, that was the hardest part of it all. But now, Pax (we're going with his second name for now) has been home for just over a week and that time apart has already been redeemed. Apart from the sleep deprivation and occassional bouts of fussiness or crying where we just don't know how to comfort him, he is an absolute wonder and joy and delight. And oh, so, beautiful. We love him with all our hearts.
